Donovan Philips Leitch (Glasgow, Schotland, 10 mei 1946), beter bekend onder de naam Donovan, is een Schotse singer/songwriter die populair werd
in de jaren zestig
In die tijd werd hij met zijn aan folk verwante popliedjes beschouwd als "het Britse antwoord op Bob Dylan", maar zijn liedjes waren veel
optimistischer en naïever, waardoor Donovan aansluiting vond bij de hippiebeweging uit die tijd

Op zesjarige leeftijd zingt hij voor het eerst in het openbaar, begeleid door een piano zingt hij het tekstueel vrij moeilijke nummer
There Was An Old Woman Who Swallowed A Fly van Burl Ives
Samen met wat klasgenootjes begint hij zijn eerste band, The Macabres
Donovan gaat kunst studeren maar stopt al vrij snel omdat een groot gedeelte van de vakken hem niet interesseren

Op z'n achttiende wordt hij ontdekt als hij in een Engelse badplaats aan het optreden is
Hij krijgt een platencontract en treedt drie weken achter elkaar op in de populaire televisie muziekshow Ready Steady Go
Dit maakt hem erg populair in Engeland en zijn eerste single, Catch In The Wind, behaalt de derde plaats in de Engelse hitparade
Donovan bereikt ook Nederland, waar Catch In The Wind op nummer 21 komt
Z'n volgende singles, Colours en Universal Soldier bereiken in Nederland de top-10, Sunshine Superman komt zelfs in de top-5

Ook heeft hij succes in de Verenigde Staten
In 1967 gaat hij met de Beatles naar India om te mediteren
Als hij terugkomt brengt hij het album Sunshine Superman uit
Dit wordt een grote hit en hij gaat toeren
In New York weet hij de Madison Square Garden beter dan elke solo-artiest voor hem te vullen
Hij blijft hits scoren, waaronder de nummer 1 hit Atlantis

In 1970 besluit hij het een stuk rustiger aan te doen
Hij trouwt met zijn jeugdliefde Linda Lawrence en ze krijgen een zoon, Julian
Donovan schrijft soundtracks voor de films Brother Sun, Sister Moon en The Pied Piper Of Hamlyn
Tussen 1971 en 1979 brengt hij totaal negen albums uit, maar hij is nauwelijks meer in de hitparade te vinden
Enkel de single Salvation Stomp bereikt in Nederland de hitparade, in 1975 komt piekt de single op de vijftiende plek

In de jaren' 80 gaat hij in de Californische woestijn wonen en in 1984 stopt hij met het maken van platen
In 1996 komt hij toch weer met nieuw materiaal, het album Sutras

Donovan came to fame in the United Kingdom in early 1965 with a series of live performances on the pop TV series, Ready Steady Go!, and his
popularity spread to the US and other countries
After signing with the British label Pye Records in 1965, he recorded a handful of singles and two albums in the folk music vein
After extricating himself from his original management contract, he began a long and successful collaboration with leading independent record
producer Mickie Most, scoring a string of hits in the UK, the US, Australia and other countries
His successful records in the 1960s included the UK hits Catch the Wind and Colours in 1965, while Sunshine Superman topped the
US Billboard Hot 100 chart the following year, and reached number two in Britain
Donovan was the first artist to be signed to CBS/Epic Records by then-new Administrative Vice President Clive Davis, who later became head of
the CBS Record empire

Donovan was one of the leading British recording artists of his day
He produced a series of hit albums and singles between 1965 and 1970
He became a friend of leading pop musicians including Joan Baez, Brian Jones, Bruce Springsteen, and The Beatles
He influenced both John Lennon and Paul McCartney when he taught them his finger-picking guitar style in 1968
Donovan's commercial fortunes waned after he parted ways with Mickie Most in 1969, and he left the music industry for a time

He continued to perform and record sporadically in the 1970s and 1980s, but gradually fell from favour
His gentle musical style and hippie image was scorned by critics, especially after the advent of punk rock
Donovan withdrew from performing and recording several times during his career, but he underwent a revival in the 1990s with the emergence of
the rave scene in Britain
Late in the decade, he recorded the 1996 album Sutras with producer and long-time fan Rick Rubin and in 2004 released a new album, Beat Cafe
On September 28, 2010, Donovan was nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2011
