Geformeerd als Brave Belt in 1971 door Randy Bachman met zijn voormalige bandlid Chad Allan, en Randy's broer Rob Bachman op drums
C.F. Turner voegde zich later dat jaar -na het eerste album- toe op bas en zang
Allen vertrok in 1972, na het genoemde tweede album, en de overgebleven Bachman-broer Tim Bachman kwam -op gitaar- bij de groep
Hun derde album werd uitgebracht in 1973 onder de nieuwe bandnaam Bachman-Turner Overdrive

Tim Bachman werd later -in 1974- vervangen door Blair Thornton
Randy Bachman vertrok in 1977, en Jim Clench voegde zich bij de groep

De band ging in 1979 uit elkaar, maar herenigde zich in 1983 en was -met verschillende line-ups- actief tot 2005
Randy Bachman en C.F. Turner herenigden zich -van 2009 tot 2018- als Bachman & Turner

Randy bracht uiteindelijk -ondersteund door zijn zoon Tal Bachman en zijn gebruikelijke live band- de naam Bachman-Turner Overdrive in 2023
weer tot leven
