Je ziet ze wel, maar je kunt onmogelijk gelijk zeggen hoe ze er uit zien: de leden van de groep Kiss
Met hun fantasierijke kleding en hun buitensporige make-up strooien ze iedereen zand in de ogen
Met hun muziek is dat echter geenszins het geval
Kiss speelt heavy metal van het zuiverste water en is daar enorm succesvol mee
Aanvankelijk een aantal jaren in Amerika, waarna in 1979 de Benelux aan de beurt is

Met de LP Dynasty, maar meer nog met de single I Was Made For Loving You, weet Kiss het jonge publiek in de Benelux aan zich te binden
Om dat resultaat te bereiken, doet de groep wel een concessie: I Was Made For Loving You is geen heavy metal, maar een regelrechte discostamper

Kiss wordt eind 1972 geformeerd in New York
De groep bestaat uit drummer Peter Criss, gitarist Ace Frehey, basgitarist/zanger Gene Simmons en gitarist/zanger Paul Stanley
Het idee voor Kiss is al in 1970 ontstaan, als Gene Simmons en Paul Stanley samen in een band spelen

Aan drummer Peter Criss komen ze door een advertentie in het bekende muziektijdschrift Rolling Stone te plaatsen
Eerst repeteren ze een tijdje als trio, maar al snel ontstaat er behoefte aan versterking met nog een gitarist
Er wordt weer een advertentie geplaatst
Nu in een ander muziektijdschrift: The Village Voice

Uit de binnengekomen reacties wordt Ace Frehley geselecteerd
De naam Kiss wordt geboren nadat de namen Albatross en Fuck zijn afgekeurd
Paul Stanley: 'Kiss is zomaar een naam die goed klinkt
Je hebt het gevoel de naam al eerder te hebben gehoord
Daarom is het Kiss geworden'

Vanaf het allereerste begin staat het voor de leden van Kiss vast, dat ze iets heel bijzonders met hun imago willen doen
Ze kiezen voor science-fiction-achtige pakken en zien er daardoor uit als figuren die zo uit een stripverhaal kunnen zijn weggelopen
Die indruk wordt nog versterkt door de make-up die ze gebruiken en die hun gezichten onherkenbaar maakt

Na een aantal succesvolle optredens in New York, komt Kiss de onafhankelijke TV-producent Bill Aucoin tegen
Die is zo enthousiast over de jongens, dat hij ze helpt bij het vinden van een platenmaatschappij
En dat lukt heel snel

Hun eerste LP's, onder andere Kiss (1974), Hotter Than Hell (1975), Alive! (Live LP 1975) en Dressed To Kill (1975) laten horen, dat Kiss een echte
heavy metal-band is
De fans, verenigd in de fanclub Kiss Army, vinden het prachtig
Sommige critici blijven echter mopperen over de aanhoudende anonimiteit van de groepsleden en over hun spottende houding
Vanaf het begin heeft Kiss hits in Amerika, onder andere met Rock And Roll All Nite (1975) en Beth (1976)

Dat laatste nummer is geschreven door drummer Pete Criss voor zijn vrouw Lydia
Het geluid van Kiss is op die single commerciëler dan daarvoor en zal dat ook daarna blijven
Daardoor verandert ook het soort fans
Waren het eerst vooral jonge mannen, echt heavy metal-fans, nu spreekt Kiss ook het jongepubliek aan dat niet speciaal in heavy metal geïnteresseerd is

Ouders, die in het begin nog wel eens bezorgd waren over de voorkeur van hun kinderen voor de rauwe muziek van Kiss
hebben er voortaanook veel minder bezwaar tegen dat hun kinderen zich net zo uitdossen en opmaken als de leden van de groep

In het begin van 1977 staat Kiss met Hard Luck Woman opnieuw in de Amerikaans hitlijsten
Vóórdat in september Calling Dr. Love een hit wordt, verschijnt op 28 juni van dat jaar een stripboek op de markt met Kiss in de hoofdrol
Er wordt verteld dat de in dat boek gebruikte rode inkt een klein beetje bloed van elk van de Kissleden bevat

Waar of niet, het gerucht heeft tot gevolg, dat van het stripboek maar liefst 400.000 exemplaren worden verkocht !
In 1978 heeft Kiss opnieuw een hit in Amerika, met de single Rocket Ride
In de herfst van dat jaar verschijnt er bovendien een tweede Kiss-stripboek en ook een Kiss-tekenfilm: Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park
De optredens van de groep zijn nog steeds heel spectaculair en trekken een massa fans
Gene Simmons legt uit waarom Kiss zoveel spectakel maakt: 'Anders kan het publiek beter thuis blijven en naar onze platen luisteren'

In 1978 besluiten alle vier de leden van Kiss om het allemaal apart ook eens met solo-LP's te proberen
Die LP's verkopen echter geen van alle echt goed
Een jaar later, in 1979, is Kiss al weer bijzonder actief als groep
Dat resuteert in de LP Dynasty, waarmee de band eindelijk ook in Europa erkenning afdwing

In de Benelux komt Dynasty op de eerste plaats van de LP-lijsten
De plaat zal tot maar liefst 34 weken in die lijsten blijven staan
Tegelijkertijd met Dynasty komt in juni ook de single I Was Made For Lovin' You uit
En ook met dát nummer is Kiss in de Benelux erg succesvol: het wordt een nummer één-hit

Kort daarop, in september, komt de opvolger Sure Know Something op een derde plaats terecht
In 1980 is Kiss nog steeds succesvol
Maar daarna verdwint de groep langzaam maar zeker uit de belangstelling van het publiek
Voor de fans zal het daarna nog lange tijd een raadsel blijven hoe de jongens van Kiss er in het echt uitzien

KISS were founded in 1972 by Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons, who invited Peter Criss and Ace Frehley. After their second show in Manhattan,
producer Bill Aucoin offered the young men a contract
For the first year of working at Casablanca Records, they had released three albums, none of them profitable
However, in summer 1975, KISS recorded the concert album Alive, which became the first step to the glory

The band got incredibly famous for their concert shows
The KISS members used spectacular scenic images, broad variety of pyrotechnical effects and, naturally, played outstanding music
It was simple, but extremely effective, rock music
The idea of makeup and costumes was proposed by Criss and found unanimous acceptance among the other musicians
Extravagant outfit and behavior on stage together with musical skills became the keys to the young band's success
Alive was their first platinum album in the USA

Destroyer, the following record released by KISS, was also a good seller
Afterwards, they produced Rock’n’Roll Over (1976), Love Gun (1977), and Alive II (1977), each to run platinum
KISS reached the highest peak of their popularity in 1976-1978
Alive II was followed by the simultaneous release of four solo albums recorded separately by each KISS member

The musicians expected to occupy an even greater position in the world music this way
For the same purpose, they played themselves in a fiction movie
However, neither solo albums nor acting brought the results the musicians wanted
The band started loosing its power at the market. Soon, the lineup went through the first change

Eric Carr substituted Peter Criss
The renewed KISS recorded Music From The Elder in 1981
This record symbolized the band's deviation from the trademark sound, as it featured some ballads, choiring and orchestral performance
Nevertheless, the new album failed to cause significant attention

In a year, KISS presented another record - Creatures Of The Night
The audience welcomed it warmer than its predecessor, and yet it was not on a par with the best of KISS. Shortly after, Frehley decided to quit

Trying to change the situation, the band utilized a new image
In 1983, the musicians appeared on an MTV show without makeup, for the first time in the ten-year history of the band
In 1991, KISS were stuck by a tragedy
Eric Carr died of cancer at 41
Eric Singer stepped behind the drums

The 1992 release Revenge hit the Best 10 in the USA
Within a long period, the band was going through changes in the lineup until 1996, when it was announced of the long-expected reunion in the original
lineup

However, the comebacks, Frehley and Criss, made a minimum contribution to Psycho-Circus, the 1998 album, which topped the USA charts
The lead-guitar and drums were recorded by the session musicians
The very fact of the old lineup restoration guaranteed high sales for this record
As the new millennium arrived, KISS went on entertaining their fans with hot shows
The announcements of new performances often came along with statements about one of the members leaving the band, which did not ruin KISS

Nowadays, KISS carry on touring and producing DVDs with their best concerts and interviews
In 2009 KISS released their new long-awaited album titled Sonic Boom (Deluxe Edition)

A year later KISS pleased their fans by the fresh live album Kiss Sonic Boom Over Europe (2010)
That record included various compositions from the recently released long play Sonic Boom and numerous songs that had become classical ones and
that are so much loved by rock and roll lovers
Excellent selection and energy of the legendary KISS' show were the basic elements of the wonderful live album, which is a great addition to
any music lover's collection
