Eind jaren '60 en begin jaren '70 zijn vooral rockgroepen populair die lange nummers spelen.
Bekende namen zijn Yes, Led Zeppelin en Pink Floyd.
Van hen is Pink Floyd een van de weinige groepen die in 1977 nog steeds zichzelf is gebleven èn een groot publiek aan zich weet te
binden.

Een hitgroep is Pink Floyd tot dan toe echter nooit geweest.
Behalve met een toevallige, bescheiden hit als Arnold Layne/If uit 1971, komt de groep in de Benelux niet in de single-hitlijsten voor.
In Amerika wordt alleen Money in 1973 een kleine hit.
Pink Floyd is een echte LP-groep.
Een grote vaste schare fans kijkt elke keer met veel belangstelling uit naar de nieuwste LP.

Na het enorme succes van de LP Wish You Were Here uit 1975, vraagt iedereen zich begin 1977 af of Pink Floyd het hoge kwaliteitsniveau
van die plaat op een volgende LP zal weten te handhaven
Dat blijkt wel degelijk het geval te zijn
Op de LP Animals, die in februari in de Benelux uit komt, laat Pink Floyd zich weer van haar beste kant horen
De plaat vliegt daarom de platenwinkels uit en staat al snel op de eerste plaats in de LP-lijsten

Pink Floyd is de eerste psychedelische rockgroep in Engeland
Psychedelisch wil in het geval van Pink Floyd zeggen, dat Roger 'Syd' Barrett, de leider van de groep zijn muzikale experimenten uitvoert
onder invloed van drugs
Een ander kenmerk van psychedelische rock is, dat de optredens gepaard gaan met een uitgebreide lichtshow die voor veel spektakel zorgt
De eerste LP van Pink Floyd, The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, wordt in 1967 een groot succes
Pink Floyd wordt een bekende verschijning op de podia in en buiten Engeland

Het drugsgebruik van Roger Barrett begint al snel uit de hand te lopen
Hij raakt geestelijk in de war en wordt op initiatief van de overige drie leden van Pink Floyd - Roger Waters, Rick Wright en Nick Mason
- vervangen door gitarist David Gilmour

Pink Floyd bouwt vervolgens onder leiding van Roger Waters verder aan een indrukwekkend oeuvre
Met LP's als Ummagumma (1969), Relics (1971), Dark Side Of The Moon (1973) en Wish You Were Here (1975) wordt een onvergetelijk
oeuvre opgebouwd
De muziek en de optredens van Pink Floyd krijgen steeds meer futuristische trekjes.
De geluids- en de lichtinstallatie worden ook steeds indrukwekkender, mede dankzij de goeiende technische mogelijkheden
En op de achtergrond werkt Roger Barrett toch zo nu en dan weer mee aan het ontwikkelen van muzikale ideeën

Na het uitkomen van de LP Animals, in februari 1977, gaat Pink Floyd weer uitgebreid op toernee
Omdat er op de plaat tamelijk veel dubbele gitaarpartijen voorkomen, wordt er voor de live-optredens tijdelijk een extra giratist aangetrokken
'Snowy' White, ex-gitarist in de groep van Al Stewart
Bovendien nodigt Pink Floyd de organist/saxofonist Dick Parry uit om gastsolist te worden

De jongens van Pink Floyd zijn in hun muziek geen vrolijke types
De teksten op de platen zijn pessimistisch en vaak ook kritisch
David Gilmour hierover:

Ik ben inderdaad een fatalist. iemand die gelooft in een voorbestemd noodlot
Roger Waters maakt zich juist ontzettend kwaad over de maatschappij
Ik ben me ervan bewust dat ik de neiging heb om zwartgallige onderwerpen te behandelen, maar daar kan ik ook niets aan doen
Ik vind teksten belangijk en wil de mensen ermee aan het denken zetten
Dan kom je al snel op minder vrolijke onderwerpen

* De muziek van Pink Floyd biedt behalve veel virtuositeit, ook altijd veel rustpunten
   Is dat om de luisteraar ruimte te beiden voor zijn/haar eigen fantasie ?
   Gilmour:

Dat is niet bewust zo gedaan
We hebben altijd ontzettend simpele nummers geschreven die uit een paar accoorden bestaan
En we hebben het ook altijd in de uitwerking simpel gehouden, vandaar die open ruimtes

Na het succes van de LP Animals zetten de leden van Pink Floyd zich aan het naken van solo-LP's
Ook daarmee hebben ze succes bij de vaste fans
In 1979 komen ze met een volgende LP, The Wall, hun grootste succes !

The story of Pink Floyd began in London in 1965
The lineup comprised the London Polytechnic students Nick Mason, Roger Waters and Richard Wright
They were joined by Syd Barrett who came from Cambridge
The name of the band was proposed by Syd as a tribute to the American bluesmen Pink Anderson and Floyd Council
They started as an R&B outfit doing covers of The Rolling Stones

Influenced by Barrett's ideas, Pink Floyd moved to the psychedelic sound with complex and long compositions
The band established their big ambitions with their very first single Arnold Layne
It was a story of a transvestite stealing women's clothing.
Although it was denied by the BBC, the single invaded Top 20 of the UK albums

The debut full format release by Pink Floyd, called Piper At The Gates Of The Dawn, saw light in 1967 and immediately became a sensation featuring
an absolutely innovational approach called 'space music'
Numerous sonic effects along with specific depressive guitar solos rendered brilliantly the inner state of a person in the surroundings of the modern
world
Barrett's apocalyptic lyrics and music were both the product of his genius and result of heavy drug intake

The massive tours and packed studio activity exhausted him mentally and physically which led to an idea of keeping him focused on songwriting apart
from stage performances
It was meant to replace Barrett during the concerts with his old friend David Gilmour
However, Barrett refused this alternative and left the band. He started his own career, but did not achieve much

Despite the new reality without the established leader, Pink Floyd remained full of energy and creative ideas and released the subsequent album,
A Saucerful Of Secrets, in 1968
It included only one song by Barret
This released was followed by the production of the soundtrack to the movie More and the double CD album Ummagumma in 1969
The first part of this record featured the band's live performances, while the second one contained solo compositions written separately by
each member of Pink Floyd

The early seventies became the new period in the Pink Floyd history
The 1970 album Atom Heart Mother was recorded in cooperation with the avant-garde composer Ron Geesin
In 1973 Pink Floyd finished the quest for the sought sound after the release of the iconic Dark Side Of The Moon
This one sold out over twenty five million copies and gave the model to follow on the next albums
The same formula of music was utilized for Wish You Were Here (1975)
Animals (1977) and The Wall

The latter became one of the most outstanding specimens of rock genre to influence multitudes of performers
This rock opera was devoted to the subject of loneliness and separation of performers from their audience with the wall being its main symbol

In 1979, Richard Write quit Pink Floyd due to bitter differences with Waters
In 1982, the band shot the movie The Wall with the music taken from the same titled album
The 1983 record The Final Cut earned little attention with only one remarkable song, Not Now John
The failure pushed Waters to start a solo career, an example followed by Gilmour and Mason
However, they did not succeed as separate artists, which motivated Mason and Gilmour to resurrect Pink Floyd in 1987

Despite the protests and claims from Waters, they managed to preserve the band's title
Richard Write came back to the group shortly after that
Immediately after the reunion, Pink Floyd recorded A Momentary Lapse Of Reason (1987)
It was supported by a long tour giving the material for the live album Delicate Sound Of Thunder (1988)
After a prolonged pause, the band released The Division Bell (1994)
The material of the new disc reminded little of the Pink Floyd old works and much of Gilmour's solo albums

In 2005 Waters once performed with Pink Floyd in London which was mistakenly taken by many fans as a sign of his long expected re-joining with
the band
